Identifying and Supporting Clients with Autism Spectrum Disorder
The prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder is currently 1 in 31 school-age children in the United States. The breadth of the spectrum is now so heterogeneous that it becomes challenging to identify autism from other conditions let alone neurotypical development. This workshop will help clinicians better understand the variability in symptom expression across the lifespan to make appropriate referrals for evaluations, and to appropriately intervene. Variations in age, cognition, language, gender, and symptom severity will be discussed, as well as complexities due to racial and cultural disparities. Clinicians will learn how to distinguish between common co-occurring conditions and overlapping symptomatology, and how to apply evidence-based supports and accommodations in treatment.
